Orton-Gillingham Tutoring

What is Orton-Gillingham?
Orton-Gillingham is a structured, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. It is especially effective for students with dyslexia but is beneficial for all learners. The approach emphasizes breaking down language into smaller, manageable parts and teaching these systematically. By incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning methods, students are able to understand and retain the skills they need to become confident, successful readers.

Tutoring Sessions Structure
Our sessions are thoughtfully structured to follow a specific scope and sequence tailored to your child’s needs. During our first session, I will conduct an assessment to understand your child’s current skill level and identify areas for growth.

Each session will include:

  1. Welcome Activity: A brief introduction to get your child engaged and ready to learn.

  2. Phonemic/Phonological Awareness Warm-Up: Activities designed to strengthen your child’s ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in words.

  3. Blending Drill: Exercises focused on combining sounds to form words, reinforcing their understanding of letter-sound relationships.

  4. Sight Words Practice: We will work on recognizing high-frequency words that your child needs to read quickly and accurately.

  5. Fluency Practice: Building your child’s ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.

Supplemental Activities
To reinforce what we learn during our sessions, each week I will provide a supplemental online activity. This will complement the specific skill we are focusing on and offer additional practice in a fun, interactive way.

Tutoring Package
To ensure that your child has all the necessary materials for our sessions, you will receive a tutoring package. This package includes all the supplies and goodies your child will need to fully participate and benefit from our lessons.

Progress Reports
Your child’s progress is important to me, and I want to ensure that you are kept informed every step of the way. You will receive regular reports detailing your child’s progress, highlighting their strengths, and outlining the next steps we will take to continue their growth.
